Choose the neighborhood before chasing a deal
A lower room price is less useful if the location makes every day harder. Start with the places you most want to visit and your arrival and departure plans. Compare realistic door-to-door journeys, including the walk to a station and any transfers. A hotel near a station is helpful only if that station serves the routes you need.
Our NYC neighborhood guide helps narrow the area first. Then compare rooms within that shortlist. Keep your late-night return, luggage and the mobility needs of your party in mind. The best base for a museum-focused family may differ from the best base for a short theater trip.
Compare the total for the entire stay
Enter your actual dates, number of rooms, adults and children before comparing. Record the final stay total shown for each option, the currency, what is due now and what remains payable later. Check separately for any property-collected charges, parking, breakfast or other extras you expect to use. Compare the same stay length and room category.
A refundable deposit or card hold is different from a nonrefundable fee, but either can affect the funds you need available. Ask the property if the wording is unclear. Save the rate details from checkout rather than relying on the first search-result price or a screenshot of a different date.

Make sure the room fits everyone
Read the room’s allowed occupancy, bed configuration and the ages entered for children. Two beds, a sofa bed and a rollaway are not interchangeable. If a bed type is described as a request, do not treat it as confirmed. Ask how the property handles your exact group before booking a nonrefundable rate.
Look for the room size and bathroom setup as well as the photos. A wide-angle photograph can be attractive without telling you where four suitcases will go. Review recent guest comments for patterns about the specific room category, noise and access, while remembering that one unusually positive or negative review is not the whole picture.
Refundable versus nonrefundable: put a value on flexibility
Compare the actual price difference and the possibility that your plans may change. Write down the cancellation deadline exactly as shown, including its time zone, and the penalty after it. “Pay later” and “free cancellation” answer different questions; a delayed charge does not automatically mean the booking is refundable.
Read the conditions for the selected rate, not another room on the same property page. Expedia’s terms explain that travel-provider rules and restrictions apply. If something important is uncertain—such as arrival time or the number of travelers—resolve it before committing to a restrictive rate.

Use a comparison search with a short checklist
Search your actual trip, then compare two or three realistic options using the same criteria. Keep a note with these fields: full stay total, room category, occupancy, location, cancellation deadline, payment timing and important extras. A simple side-by-side comparison is often more useful than endlessly opening new tabs.
The Expedia search below is an affiliate tool for exploring stays and flights. It does not guarantee the lowest price or an exclusive discount. Before paying, check the final provider terms and compare direct booking when it is relevant. Once the room is settled, our first-time NYC guide and custom planning service can help turn the location into a workable trip.

Questions before you book
Is the lowest nightly price the cheapest stay?
Not necessarily. Compare the final total for the same dates, travelers, room category and extras, including any amounts the property collects separately.
Does pay later mean I can cancel for free?
No. Payment timing and cancellation conditions are separate. Read the selected rate’s exact deadline and penalty.
Do the photos show the room I will get?
Check the exact room category and whether features are guaranteed or requested. The photographs in this guide are illustrative and do not identify a recommended hotel.
