Christmas beyond NYC · 2026–27
Christmas in Pennsylvania
A city market. A glowing garden. A village after dark.
Pick one Pennsylvania holiday cluster: Philadelphia for a rail-friendly city day, Bethlehem for a market weekend, Bucks County for a village lights outing, or Kennett Square for Longwood Gardens. These stops are spread out. A shorter list with time for meals and warm-up breaks is usually more useful than a statewide checklist squeezed into one day.

Start with one area
Choose a trip that fits your day.
A city day without a car
Philadelphia
Train to the city, then one compact Center City route with a seated meal.
A market weekend
Bethlehem
Choose a published Christkindlmarkt date and keep downtown and SteelStacks travel separate.
Free lights
Peddler’s Village
The organizer confirms free admission and parking, with lights through January 18, 2027.
A garden splurge
Longwood / Kennett Square
Book timed admission and give indoor conservatories and outdoor lights enough time.
Book the right base
Stay near the part of the trip you want.
The search starts in Philadelphia for the rail-friendly city plan. Change it to Bethlehem, Lahaska / New Hope or Kennett Square for those outings. Confirm the exact property, accessible room, beds, parking and cancellation terms; area comparisons are not hotel inspections.
| Area | Useful for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Philadelphia Center City | A market-and-museum trip without a car | Compare walking distance to your actual stops and the station transfer. Add parking and mandatory destination fees to a car-based stay. |
| Bethlehem | A Christkindlmarkt weekend | Decide whether you want downtown meals or proximity to SteelStacks. Crossing between districts is a separate journey. |
| Bucks County or Kennett Square | A village lights evening or Longwood weekend | Choose the attraction’s own cluster. A Philadelphia room can erase apparent savings when taxis or long drives are added. |

Christmas Village in Philadelphia

When: Preview November 21–22; regular season November 26–December 27, 2026. Closed November 23–25 and December 25.
Cost: The market visit is separate from paid rides, food and shopping. Check the official visitor information for any activity-specific charge.
Published hours: Sunday–Thursday noon–8 pm; Friday–Saturday noon–9 pm. Thanksgiving is 9 am–5 pm; Christmas Eve noon–5 pm. Do not arrive for shopping before the actual market opening.
Before you book: Use the official date and hours rather than an old Christmas Eve end date. Keep a restaurant or museum backup for the day the market is closed.

Peddler’s Village Grand Illumination and lights

When: Grand Illumination November 20, 2026, 6:15 pm. Lights are announced every evening through January 18, 2027.
Cost: Free admission and parking. Food, shopping and optional attractions are extra.
A useful low-cost lights choice, especially after Christmas. The gingerbread display is separately announced November 20–January 10. Shops and bathrooms have their own operating hours.
Before you book: Opening-night crowds and parking pressure are noted by the organizer. A different evening can simplify the visit; confirm Christmas Day retail, food and restroom availability before planning a holiday-night outing.

A Longwood Christmas
When: November 20, 2026–January 10, 2027. The season page lists gardens open 10 am–11 pm daily; timed entry still controls admission.
Cost: Paid timed admission. Use the dated official booking calendar for each age category, mandatory fees and the final total; no generic “from” price is used as a holiday quote.
Plan a mix of conservatory time and outdoor paths. This year’s announced theme is Cosmic Christmas; the photographs here show older displays and do not illustrate the exact 2026 installation.
Before you book: Book the selected entry window, check accessibility and dining separately, and read the ticket terms before arranging a nonrefundable trip. A regular attraction pass or third-party ticket is not assumed to include Christmas admission.

Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem

When: November 13–15, 20–22, 27–29; December 3–6, 10–13 and 17–20, 2026. Check the selected day’s opening and closing hours.
Cost: Thursday/Friday admission $14 all-in. Saturday/Sunday $16.50 all-in, including fees and city amusement tax. Children 5 and under free.
The ticket page states free Friday entry from 5–8 pm. Admission and official concessions are cashless; individual artisans may accept cash. All sales are final, with no refunds or exchanges.
Before you book: This paid market is different from a free public-street Bethlehem walk. Bring a usable card, confirm accessible routes, and check the calendar before booking transport.

Less rushing. More enjoying.
Three ways to make the trip work.
All routes are shown below.
Suggested route · day
Philadelphia: a market day by train
Date fit: A market operating date; December 5 is the sample Saturday, not Christmas Day.
Times below are recommendations for planning. Only a time identified as an official event window or your booked departure is a scheduled time.
- Late morningArrive by your actual train and get to Center City. A warm meal first avoids waiting outdoors for the market’s noon opening.
- From noonVisit Christmas Village in a compact loop. Keep rides, food and shopping optional rather than assuming a free outing means every activity is free.
- AfternoonChoose one prechecked museum if you want an indoor anchor, or use a seated café break and a short public-street look.
- Before your returnAllow time to reach the station, find the platform and use the bathroom. A market photo stop should not put the reserved train at risk.
Reserve: Round-trip train tickets; any museum admission for that day; meal if a guaranteed table matters; local transfer if needed.
Indoor / weather alternative: Choose a museum whose holiday opening is confirmed, plus lunch. The Barnes is an optional separately ticketed art stop; check its own calendar, age suitability and access before replacing the market.
Suggested route · evening
Bucks County: free lights, one warm meal
Date fit: An evening November 20–January 18; confirm shop and food hours separately, especially December 25.
Times below are recommendations for planning. Only a time identified as an official event window or your booked departure is a scheduled time.
- Before darkArrive with time for a meal and a bathroom break. On opening night, the organizer’s ceremony is 6:15 pm; that is not the daily lighting time for every evening.
- EveningChoose a short lights loop. Add the gingerbread display only within its November 20–January 10 dates and actual opening hours.
- AfterwardFinish near your parking or hotel. A January lights visit should not assume the gingerbread exhibition or all shops are still open.
Reserve: Dinner and a room if needed; no admission ticket for the confirmed free lights and parking. Confirm any optional attraction separately.
Indoor / weather alternative: Shorten the outdoor loop and keep the warm meal. Do not drive in unsafe conditions merely because the attraction itself has no admission cost.
Suggested route · weekend
Kennett Square: Longwood as the main event
Date fit: A booked entry November 20–January 10; December 12–13 is the sample overnight.
Times below are recommendations for planning. Only a time identified as an official event window or your booked departure is a scheduled time.
- AfternoonArrive, settle luggage and eat before your timed entry. Choose the admission window that fits your group’s energy, not just a late discounted-looking result.
- Suggested late afternoon / eveningExplore indoor conservatory areas and a manageable outdoor lights loop. These are recommended visit periods; the booking confirmation controls your entry time.
- Afterward / next morningReturn to the hotel, then have a relaxed breakfast before traveling home. Leave Philadelphia and Bethlehem for separate days.
Reserve: Actual dated Christmas admission; dining if needed; hotel; accessible route and mobility equipment answers; transport in both directions.
Indoor / weather alternative: The conservatories offer indoor portions, but the trip and outdoor garden paths still face weather. Check the operator’s conditions and shorten the outdoor part; admission is not automatically refundable.

Understand the whole cost
Useful budgets, with the assumptions visible.
All sample costs are in US dollars. Food, transport and lodging below are editorial planning allowances, not live quotes. A hotel allowance is a target for the complete stay including mandatory taxes and fees; if your quoted total is higher, replace that allowance. Tickets with a verified fixed price are shown separately from unverified checkout charges.

Does a pass help?
Use only attractions you will actually visit. Add their current individual admission totals, then compare the pass price plus any mandatory reservations, supplements and transport. Free town walks and free lights contribute $0 to that break-even calculation. A city sightseeing pass is not automatically valid for a regional holiday train, house tour, garden event or theme-park night. Verify the exact dated inclusion before paying.
From your starting point to the door
Plan the journey in both directions.
From NYC, use rough off-peak car allowances of 1½–2½ hours to Bethlehem or Bucks County, 2–3 hours to Philadelphia and 2½–3½ hours to the Kennett Square area, before rest stops and unusual traffic. Train travel from New York Penn to Philadelphia is often roughly 1¼–1¾ hours on selected Amtrak services; check the actual timetable and fare. 30th Street Station still requires a Center City connection. Longwood and Peddler’s Village are not effortless walk-on extensions of the Philadelphia train trip: price a real transfer or use a car and a separate day.
Official transport planning · Last checked October 9, 2026.
Luggage, late arrivals and the return
Hotel check-in and storage are property-specific. Confirm early bag storage and late arrival rather than putting suitcases into an attraction plan. On departure day, return to the airport area or city with a buffer for traffic and weather; a regional outing is a poor place to spend your final tight hours before a flight. Flights and airport transfers are excluded from the sample budgets.
For a NYC stay at either end of the trip, use our JFK, LGA and EWR arrival guide and NYC hotel-area comparison. Price a rental car, insurance, parking and child seats separately if you do not already have a vehicle.
December is not one identical week
Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and January.
Christmas Eve: Philadelphia’s market lists noon–5 pm. Christmas Day: that market is closed; Longwood’s season page lists daily opening, but confirm a valid December 25 ticket and your meal arrangements. December 26–27: the Philadelphia market remains within its published regular season, then ends December 27. Bethlehem’s market has already ended December 20. January: Longwood runs through January 10, Peddler’s Village gingerbread through January 10 and lights through January 18. Do not convert these different end dates into a blanket “everything stays open” claim.
Restaurant and shop hours do not follow an attraction’s date range. Confirm a meal, bathroom access and your return connection for December 24, 25 and 31 before making a tight plan. Do not assume a New Year’s Eve party, fireworks display or late-night transport is included.
Make the trip fit the people
Warmth, access and a little breathing room.
Choose by needs, not age.
Ask about actual walking distance, steps, accessible restrooms, seating and the noise or lighting environment. Older adults and children have different abilities and preferences within the same age group. A short route, an early entry and one main booking can help a multigenerational party without assuming anyone’s limits.
For toddlers, keep the outing short, protect the nap window and check stroller rules. School-age children may enjoy a specific story or exhibit; teens may prefer a photo walk, an independent food choice or one striking evening attraction.
Plan a real meal and rest.
Budget for seated warm-up stops rather than relying entirely on market snacks. Check the current menu with the restaurant for vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free or allergy needs. We do not label an unverified kitchen suitable for a dietary requirement. Discuss cross-contact separately from the presence of a menu item.
Short winter daylight and coastal or exposed wind make a smaller loop sensible. A taxi can be worth the extra cost when it removes an icy hill, a luggage transfer or a long cold wait; confirm accessible vehicle needs in advance.
Photographs without the sidewalk stress
Philadelphia: photograph from the pedestrian market area, keep stall entrances clear and avoid using a tripod where it blocks a route. Peddler’s Village: a smaller path loop on an ordinary evening can be easier than the opening ceremony; ask before photographing inside shops. Longwood: follow current tripod and conservatory rules and leave room for other visitors. The photographs show earlier displays, not this year’s Cosmic Christmas installation.

A practical winter kit
Pack for the pauses as well as the photos.
Bring weather-appropriate shoes with traction, layers, gloves and a charged phone. Check the forecast shortly before travel; a seasonal reference image is not a forecast. Keep an inexpensive kit and use clothes and equipment you already have.

Warm socks and gloves

What to decide now—and what to leave flexible
Choose your dates, party and anchor booking now. Current released train or event tickets can be compared against your actual plan; do not book merely because an old page suggests urgency. Keep unannounced events off a nonrefundable itinerary. Two weeks before travel, resolve meals and access arrangements; 48 hours before, check road, transit and weather notices; the day before, reconfirm the operator’s date, arrival time and ticket instructions.
Questions before you go.
Which Pennsylvania Christmas outing is easiest without a car?
Philadelphia has direct Amtrak service from NYC and a compact Center City market route. Still plan the station transfer and reserve your return. Longwood, Bucks County and Bethlehem need their own transport planning.
What is still open in January 2027?
The confirmed Longwood Christmas season ends January 10. Peddler’s Village lights continue through January 18, while its gingerbread display ends January 10. Philadelphia and Bethlehem markets end in December.
Should I buy an attraction pass for these routes?
Only if the current pass explicitly includes the exact dated admissions you want and its all-in total is lower. Free lights have no admission value to offset a pass, and special Christmas events may require separate reservations or tickets.
