JFK to Manhattan: Subway, LIRR or Taxi?

NYC Notebook · Smart planning

From JFK to Manhattan, choose AirTrain plus subway when keeping the fare low matters, AirTrain plus LIRR for a rail connection into Midtown, or an official taxi when reducing transfers matters most. Your hotel address, luggage and arrival time should decide the route.

JFK is in Queens, and the airport train does not take you directly to a Manhattan hotel. Understanding that one detail makes the trip much easier: first reach the right connection, then finish the journey to your actual address.

Reduced fares, group discounts and ticket eligibility can change your total. Subway and railroad prices are per traveler; compare a taxi’s full group cost rather than dividing its base fare alone.

AirTrain plus subway: follow your destination

Follow airport signs for the AirTrain. Jamaica connects with the subway at Sutphin Boulevard–Archer Avenue–JFK Airport; Howard Beach connects with the A train. For the reverse journey, the MTA warns that an A train going to Lefferts Boulevard does not reach the Howard Beach airport connection.

For Midtown, a Jamaica connection can be a sensible starting point. For another neighborhood, plan to your hotel’s exact address instead of selecting a route merely because it says “Manhattan.” Use the live trip planner for the direction, transfers and service changes.

The standard subway fare is currently $3, and the airport connection adds a separate AirTrain fare. Pay for the subway at its own fare gates. The ordinary subway fare-cap guide can help with the rest of your visit; do not assume that cap makes the airport leg free.

AirTrain plus LIRR: choose the right Manhattan terminal

At Jamaica, choose a Manhattan-bound LIRR train for Penn Station or Grand Central Madison, based on your hotel. Check the destination on the departure board before boarding. Buy the appropriate rail ticket at a station machine or through TrainTime; a subway tap is not an LIRR ticket.

The rail terminal is still not the hotel. Include the final subway, taxi or walk in your comparison, especially if you have several bags. A fast station-to-station trip can become inconvenient when its last leg is long.

Before boarding, confirm your train, ticket type and any activation instructions in the current MTA guidance or app.

The AirTrain fare is separate—and groups should check the discount

JFK currently lists an $8.75 single AirTrain fare at Jamaica or Howard Beach. Travel between airport terminals is free. You can pay the airport fare with supported contactless methods or an OMNY card.

The airport also lists an AirTrain group fare: the first rider pays $8.75 and additional riders pay $4.50 each, for up to five riders using the same payment method within five minutes. Read the current conditions before using it, including the restriction on reusing that payment method for 15 minutes. This is an AirTrain discount; it does not cover everyone’s subway or LIRR ticket.

Taxi or prebooked transfer: compare the complete journey

Use an official taxi stand or the pickup instructions in your booked car service. JFK advises travelers to ignore transport solicitors in the terminal. Its published Manhattan taxi rate is a base fare, with additional fees and possible tolls; it is not an all-in quote.

For a prebooked ride, confirm the number of passengers and bags, vehicle size, pickup terminal, flight-delay policy, waiting time, cancellation terms and whether tolls or other fees are included. Save the instructions before your flight.

A simple arrival plan you can save

  1. Save your hotel’s full address and check-in instructions, not only its neighborhood.
  2. Choose a first route and a fallback before you fly.
  3. On arrival, check current airport and transit alerts before paying.
  4. Allow for baggage collection, the airport connection and the last leg to your hotel.
  5. Keep your first evening light: check in, eat nearby and take a short walk if you feel up to it.

If you rely on elevators, check the entire route and current elevator status. Step-free airport facilities do not guarantee that every hotel-area subway station has a working elevator. Start the rest of your trip with our first-time NYC visitor guide.

A few useful answers

Is the JFK AirTrain free?

Between airport terminals, yes. At the Jamaica or Howard Beach public-transport connection, a fare applies. Check the airport’s current rules for the trip you are making.

Is a taxi always faster than the train?

No. Road traffic, terminal pickup arrangements and your hotel location matter. Compare the current route rather than planning around a guaranteed travel time.

Should I reserve a big attraction for my arrival evening?

Leave room for delays and tiredness. If you book something, choose terms you understand and leave a generous buffer after the expected hotel arrival.
