Near Nassau favorites

For a closer harvest outing, use the Westbury pumpkin-shopping and free-display plan; paid maze tickets and pumpkin purchases are separate.

LICM’s October 24 Ghostly Gala adds an indoor Halloween option. The Oyster Bay free-admission plan connects to Sagamore Hill. Choose a Nassau starting area before adding a second stop.

Near Suffolk favorites

Compare Melville’s festival costs for western Suffolk, or plan a Water Mill apple-picking day with the required shared bag priced before you go.

Centerport’s November 7 Raptor Day plan builds around Vanderbilt. The Riverhead orchard plan stays in the East End. Choose western, central or East End Suffolk to keep the drive sensible.

Seasonal calendar sources checked October 9, 2026. Dates do not guarantee tickets. Calendar budgets identify group size and separate verified prices from estimates.

Things to do on Long Island with kids: six manageable weekend plans for Nassau and Suffolk families, with time to eat, rest and enjoy the day.

October 10–November 15, 2026 · Researched October 9, 2026

How to use these plans: Choose the area that keeps your drive manageable. Each itinerary is a suggested family day, not a packaged tour or reserved booking. Times are suggested unless a scheduled event is explicitly identified. Age suggestions are our editorial guidance.

Admission examples use two adults and two children ages 6–11. Food amounts are planning estimates; fuel, tolls, parking, ticket fees and extras are separate. Official venue details can change—check the linked source and availability before leaving. These samples do not automatically refresh each week.

Hands-on play, aviation, gardens and coastal discoveries—good starting points when you want to stay on the western side of Long Island.

Long Island Children’s Museum

Choose this for children who learn by touching, building and exploring. Allow roughly two to three hours rather than squeezing in every exhibit.

Before you go: Free parking and permitted cafeteria lunches help keep the day manageable. Check library passes and any special-event exclusions.

Garden City · Suggested ages 5–14 · Mostly indoors

Cradle of Aviation Museum

A strong choice for children interested in airplanes, astronauts and how things work. Make it a two-hour museum visit, or add a planetarium show if its age guidance suits your children.

Before you go: Museum-only and museum/planetarium tickets have different prices. Choose one Museum Row attraction as the main event instead of paying for two full visits.

Oyster Bay · Suggested ages 5–12 · Outdoor focus

Sagamore Hill

Pick this for a low-cost morning combining history and fresh air. A short grounds visit gives children a manageable introduction to Theodore Roosevelt’s home.

Before you go: The grounds are free. Going inside the Roosevelt home requires a separate advance tour reservation; grounds access does not include a house tour.

For families who enjoy wandering, looking closely and taking a slower walk. Turn the visit into a color-and-shape hunt and let younger children set the pace.

Before you go: Closed Sunday, October 11, 2026, for a private event. Published regular-season hours run through October 31; check later dates separately. Advance tickets are required except for members and library-pass holders.

A useful coastal science stop, especially when you want a shorter educational outing. Start with the exhibits and add outdoor time only if the wind and weather suit your family.

Before you go: Center admission is free, but parking may cost extra. Organized programs can require registration and a separate fee. The center is at West End 2, not the main boardwalk.

Long Island Aquarium

Choose this for a family that enjoys marine life and wants one substantial attraction for the day. Allow about three hours with a food break and a presentation selected from the current schedule.

Before you go: Get a quote for your date and children’s ages. Encounters can have separate charges and restrictions; some exhibits and activities involve outdoor areas.

Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium

A good match for curious children who like collections, science or space. Combine a museum visit with a short grounds walk, or build the day around a suitable planetarium show.

Before you go: Check the selected show’s age recommendation. General admission, tours and planetarium options differ; library passes do not necessarily include every add-on.

Sweetbriar Nature Center

Try this for a shorter nature outing with observation and discovery rather than an all-day attraction. Keep any trail time flexible and stop while younger children are still enjoying it.

Before you go: Check current visit charges and program availability directly. No dogs are permitted, and larger groups should call ahead. Do not assume a hands-on animal encounter is included.

The Long Island Museum

Choose this for children who enjoy objects, local history and discussing how people lived. A sketchbook or a ‘choose your favorite object’ challenge can make the visit more engaging.

Before you go: The campus includes buildings on opposite sides of Route 25A. Review the map and current exhibitions; check museum discounts before buying admission.

Adventureland

Choose this when rides are the main event and you are comfortable with a bigger family budget. Allow roughly three to five hours; the right length depends on queues, weather and the rides your children can use.

Before you go: Check operating dates and individual ride height limits first. Adults who are not riding still need admission. Listed tickets total $182 before tax for two adults age 25+ and two children ages 2–24; food is additional.

What kind of day does your family need?

  • A rainy Nassau day: Start with the Children’s Museum or Cradle of Aviation. Choose based on your children’s interests.
  • A low-cost outdoor morning: Try Sagamore Hill’s grounds; bring layers and keep the walk short.
  • A short outing with younger children: Consider the Children’s Museum or a brief Sweetbriar visit. Check facilities and access needs before traveling.
  • A science or space day: Compare Cradle of Aviation with Vanderbilt’s museum and planetarium options.
  • A bigger Suffolk outing: Compare Aquarium admission with an Adventureland ride day, including every adult ticket and food costs.
  • A calmer day: Try Old Westbury Gardens on an open date or a shorter Long Island Museum visit.

Start with your home town, then the activity. Spending half the day in the car rarely improves the family mood.

Six fall family weekend plans

Planning update · October 17, 2026: the October 10–11 sample has ended. Start with October 17–18 or a later dated plan below. Earlier samples are archive references, not upcoming events.

October 10–11, 2026

Nassau · Oyster Bay · Suggested ages 5–12

A free history-and-nature morning

Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay
Sagamore Hill · Photo: National Park Service · Public domain. Reference photograph; appearance and exhibits may change.

10:00 am: Start at Sagamore Hill, 20 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay. Spend about an hour exploring the grounds. Try a family challenge: spot three signs of autumn and ask what a president’s home might have looked like a century ago.

11:15 am: Pause for a snack outside where permitted. Around noon, visit Old Orchard Museum if open; its published Friday–Sunday hours are noon–4:30 pm. Finish with lunch rather than adding another long drive.

Cost: Grounds admission is $0. Allow an estimated $20–$35 for food for four, plus travel. House tours are separate and require advance reservations. This sample does not include a house tour.

Weather swap: Choose the indoor Cradle of Aviation plan below if conditions make outdoor time unpleasant. Bring layers; trail surfaces need individual assessment for strollers and mobility needs.

October 17–18, 2026

Suffolk · Smithtown · Suggested ages 3–10

A small adventure for curious animal lovers

A goat photographed at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown
Goat at Sweetbriar Nature Center · Photo: Gail Frederick · CC BY 2.0. Reference photograph; appearance and exhibits may change.

10:00 am: Visit Sweetbriar Nature Center, 62 Eckernkamp Drive, Smithtown. The center lists daily hours of 9:30 am–4:30 pm; preserve hours start at 9 am. Give children a simple observation mission: compare a woodland habitat with an animal’s home.

11:15 am: Take a short trail outing only if conditions suit your family. Turn back before children tire, then leave for lunch by noon. For toddlers, a brief center visit can be the whole outing.

Cost: Check the center for visit charges, donations and any separate program fees; a current general admission amount was not confirmed. Allow an estimated $20–$35 for family food, plus travel and any admission.

Before going: No dogs are permitted. Groups over ten should call ahead. Do not assume an animal encounter or special program is included. In heavy rain, use an indoor museum plan instead.

October 24–25, 2026

Suffolk · Centerport · Suggested ages 6–12

Museum discoveries with an optional space show

Vanderbilt estate and museum in Centerport
Vanderbilt Museum · Photo: Itasca · CC BY-SA 3.0. Reference photograph; appearance and exhibits may change.

11:00 am: Arrive at the Vanderbilt Museum, 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport. Explore museum collections first, then spend a little time on the grounds if dry. Ask everyone to choose one surprising object to describe over lunch.

12:30 pm: Take a lunch break after your visit, or arrange your museum time around a separately selected planetarium show. Confirm the October schedule and age guidance before booking; no showtime is reserved by this plan.

Cost: General admission for two adults and two children ages 6–11 is $50 at listed rates ($15 adults, $10 children under 12). Estimated lunch adds $30–$50. Planetarium or tour upgrades, travel and other fees are extra.

Save: Ask your library about its pass; eligibility and availability vary. In rain, focus on the indoor collections. For sensitive children, check show sound/light guidance before adding the planetarium.

October 31–November 1, 2026

Nassau · Garden City · Suggested ages 3–10

A thoughtful Sunday of play and family memories

An Archimedean screw water exhibit at Long Island Children’s Museum

Sunday, November 1, 10:00 am: Start with self-directed play at Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City.

From 11:00 am: The museum’s Día de los Muertos event is listed for November 1, 11 am–2 pm, with crafts and activities about family memories and remembering loved ones. This is a cultural, family-centered event; decide whether its themes suit your children. Confirm any event-specific admission terms.

12:15 pm: Take a food break, then return to an exhibit your children enjoyed. Bringing food for the museum cafeteria is permitted under its visitor rules.

Cost: Standard admission for four visitors age one or older is $80 at listed rates. Under-one admission is free. Food and any event extras are additional; check library-pass availability and event exclusions. The indoor plan also works in rain.

November 7–8, 2026

Suffolk · Riverhead · Suggested ages 3–12

An aquarium day without an overloaded schedule

Marine life photographed at Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead
Long Island Aquarium · Photo: Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net) · CC BY-SA 4.0. Reference photograph; appearance and exhibits may change.

10:00 am: Arrive at Long Island Aquarium, Riverhead. Give yourselves about two hours to explore at your children’s pace. Choose one presentation from the day’s posted schedule rather than trying to see everything.

Noon: Take a lunch break in line with current food and re-entry rules. Add one final exhibit afterward, then head home around 1:30–2 pm. From western Nassau, the drive may be a major part of the day; check your actual route before buying.

Cost: Obtain a date-specific quote through official admission options. Prices were not sufficiently confirmed for a family total. Estimated food allowance: $30–$50 for four, plus tickets, parking, travel and optional encounters.

Weather: Some parts of the visit involve outdoor areas; prioritize indoor exhibits in poor weather. Check accessibility, discounts and encounter age limits directly. Reserve paid extras only if they fit your family.

November 14–15, 2026

Suffolk · Stony Brook · Suggested ages 6–12

Carriages, art and a slower afternoon

A historic Buckboard Surrey carriage at The Long Island Museum
Carriage collection at The Long Island Museum · Photo: Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net) · CC BY-SA 4.0. Reference photograph; appearance and exhibits may change.

Noon: Visit The Long Island Museum, 1200 Route 25A, Stony Brook. Its published Friday–Sunday hours are noon–5 pm. Plan about 90 minutes for the collections currently open.

1:30 pm: Take a snack break, then let each child sketch or describe one object they would put in a museum about life today. End with an early meal nearby. This quieter plan suits children who enjoy looking, talking and drawing; toddlers may prefer a shorter visit.

Cost: Listed admission for two adults and two children ages 6–11 is $50 ($15 adults, $10 students ages 6–17). Children under six enter free. Allow an estimated $30–$50 for food, plus travel.

Save: The museum lists free admission for up to four visitors with a qualifying SNAP EBT card; confirm terms. Check the site map before arrival—the campus includes buildings across Route 25A. In rain, keep the plan centered on indoor galleries.

Indoor backup: a flight-and-space morning

Exterior of the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City
Cradle of Aviation Museum · Photo: Sullynyflhi · Public domain. Reference photograph; appearance and exhibits may change.

For a wet Nassau weekend, try Cradle of Aviation Museum on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Garden City. Its published Tuesday–Sunday hours are 10 am–5 pm. Start around 10 am, explore the galleries for two hours, then finish with lunch.

Listed museum admission totals $68 for two adults and two children ages 6–11 ($18 adults, $16 children ages 2–12). A museum/planetarium combination totals $96 at listed rates. Food, travel and extras are separate. Check show availability and library-pass terms before booking.

Check savings before buying tickets

  • Your library card can change the budget. Ask your home library about museum passes, booking windows, covered guests and special-event exclusions. A pass at another library may not be available to you.
  • Compare memberships with repeat visits. Calculate the cost using your actual family ages and intended visits; do not assume every show or event is included.
  • Pack a permitted lunch. Check venue food rules first. A shorter outing with one admission can be more enjoyable than paying for two museums in one day.
  • Check eligibility, not just discount headlines. Resident, military, SNAP/EBT and accessibility-related admission terms differ by venue.
