Start with the view you want
The Empire State Building is appealing partly because you are standing in a place that already belongs to your idea of New York. That makes it different from choosing a deck purely by height. Book it if being in the building itself matters. If your dream picture must include the Empire State Building in the skyline, you need a viewpoint elsewhere.
The first purchase decision is the main 86th-floor experience versus a ticket that also includes the 102nd floor. The second is whether any express or other premium option is worth its additional cost. Keep those two decisions separate; a higher floor and faster access are different benefits.
86th floor versus 102nd floor
The official attraction presents the 86th floor as its main observatory and the 102nd as a higher, enclosed experience with floor-to-ceiling windows. The observatory visit also includes the building’s exhibits; check the official observatories and exhibits guide for the current route.
| Your priority | Option to compare first |
|---|---|
| A classic main-deck visit while controlling the budget | 86th-floor ticket |
| Additional height and a glass-enclosed perspective | 86th + 102nd-floor ticket |
| A shorter queue commitment | Exact express upgrade terms |
Do not buy the 102nd simply because it sounds more complete. Decide whether your group would rather spend that difference on another experience, a meal or more flexible plans.

When does an express ticket make sense?
Express access can be worth comparing when you have a limited visit window and strongly dislike queues. Read the exact product terms before paying: faster access should not be interpreted as skipping every security procedure or eliminating all waiting. Compare the price for the same floor combination, date and entry time.
If your next booking is so tight that any delay would ruin the day, change the schedule before adding an upgrade. A little space between attractions often gives better value than buying your way through an overpacked itinerary. Keep the timed attraction you care about most as the anchor.
Choose a time without paying for a fantasy
Daylight helps you read the city’s layout. After dark, the appeal shifts toward illuminated buildings and streets. A visit around changing light can be lovely, but it also adds uncertainty: weather, entry time and crowds affect what you actually see. Treat visibility as a condition to check, not an inclusion a reseller can guarantee.
Photographs through glass can show reflections. Wear a simple dark top if reducing your reflection matters, clean your lens and avoid flash. On any outdoor section, dress for the conditions at height rather than the temperature in a sheltered subway entrance. Follow staff instructions and the attraction’s current equipment rules.

An easy surrounding itinerary
Keep the rest of the day nearby and flexible. Leave time for the exhibits rather than treating the building as an elevator to a selfie. Have a meal before or after the visit, then choose a short Midtown walk instead of crossing the city for another strict reservation. Our first-time visitor guide helps with the transport basics.
If you are considering a pass, compare the exact floor access it covers. Standard admission on a pass and an upgraded individual ticket may not be equivalent. Use the pass break-even guide to compare what you would actually buy, including any reservation steps or extra charges.

Questions before you book
Is the 102nd floor automatically included?
No. Check that your chosen ticket explicitly includes both the 86th and 102nd floors. Standard and premium products can have different inclusions.
Will I see the Empire State Building from its own deck?
You are in the building. If photographing its full exterior in the skyline is your priority, choose another viewpoint.
Is express the same as the higher-floor upgrade?
No. Compare floor access separately from queue-related benefits. Read the exact package description before checkout.
