Things To Do NY · The next good plan
A great view is only half the plan.
By Things To Do NY · Checked October 23, 2026
Choose the rooftop that fits your night: skyline-first, conversation-first, or music after dark. These ten NYC rooftops offer different reasons to go upstairs, with the practical details that help you choose.
How we choose: An editorial shortlist based on current official venue information, setting, neighborhood, and practical visitor fit. We have not personally tested every option; numbering is for browsing, not a measured ranking.
Start with your kind of plan
For a skyline outing, start with Westlight or 230 Fifth. For a special occasion, compare Overstory and Harriet’s. For indoor lounge comfort, consider The Skylark or Refinery; for a lively finish, check Le Bain’s program.
For the skyline-first evening
01. Westlight
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
The point of crossing the river is getting Manhattan in the frame. Westlight, at The William Vale, suits the person who wants the city spread out in front of them rather than a view between neighboring buildings. Make the reservation the anchor of the evening and leave time to enjoy Williamsburg at street level too.
Make it a plan: Walk the Williamsburg waterfront before your booking, then keep dinner nearby.

For a Brooklyn waterfront date
02. Harriet’s Rooftop
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Heights
Harriet’s puts the Brooklyn waterfront at the center of the plan. Choose it for a polished evening after a walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park, especially when the group wants a destination rather than several bar stops. The rooftop and Harriet’s Lounge are separate spaces, so the name on the reservation matters.
Make it a plan: Walk the waterfront first, allowing enough time to climb back up from the park and arrive unhurried.
For a little journey with the view
03. Panorama Room
Graduate by Hilton New York, Roosevelt Island
Getting to Roosevelt Island changes the rhythm of the night. Panorama Room works particularly well when you want the East River setting to feel like part of the outing. Think elevated cocktail lounge with city views, rather than a promise of an open-air terrace seat. A mocktail and an early reservation can be as good a reason to go as a late night.
Make it a plan: Explore the island’s waterfront before the reservation and check the route home in advance.

For the special-occasion splurge
04. Overstory
70 Pine Street, Financial District
Overstory’s 64th-floor setting and wraparound terrace give a downtown evening a real sense of occasion. This is the choice for a small group who care about the drinks as much as the skyline, or a date where one memorable stop is enough. Build the budget around the current menu rather than assuming the view is a free add-on.
Make it a plan: Have dinner downtown and keep the last stop here, rather than booking a tight transfer across Manhattan.
For that unmistakable Empire State view
05. 230 Fifth
Flatiron / NoMad, Manhattan
Sometimes the obvious photo is exactly the photo you want. 230 Fifth is a useful pick for visiting friends who want the Empire State Building unmistakably in view and a rooftop that feels social. Its indoor space also gives you a reason to consider it outside perfect summer weather, though the outdoor experience still depends on conditions.
Make it a plan: Start with a Madison Square Park stroll, then choose an arrival time with some daylight left.

For a forecast-flexible Midtown plan
06. Refinery Rooftop
63 West 38th Street, Manhattan
Refinery’s combination of indoor space, a patio, and a retractable glass roof makes it a sensible shortlist choice when the forecast keeps changing. It fits the evening that begins near Bryant Park and needs a comfortable place to land afterward. Reserve for the company and the atmosphere; treat the exact skyline angle as a bonus.
Make it a plan: Visit Bryant Park or the library area first, then leave room for a proper sit-down stop.
For conversation above the Midtown rush
07. The Skylark
200 West 39th Street, Manhattan
The Skylark offers an elevated lounge option when your evening already revolves around Midtown. An indoor setting makes this a useful choice for people who want the height without basing the entire night on outdoor weather. Pick it for an intentional cocktail stop rather than assuming every rooftop must be a late-night dance venue.
Make it a plan: Book around dinner or a show, with enough time to settle in instead of watching the clock.

For a lively Lower East Side night
08. Mr. Purple
Hotel Indigo, 180 Orchard Street, Manhattan
Mr. Purple is the choice when the neighborhood matters as much as the view. The 15th-floor setting makes a change of pace after dinner on the Lower East Side, while the neighborhood offers plenty to do before you head upstairs. Choose it for a social evening and check the event calendar if your group wants a particular energy.
Make it a plan: Eat in the neighborhood first and make this the booked stop, rather than juggling reservations in several boroughs.
For a Broadway-adjacent treat
09. St. Cloud Rooftop
The Knickerbocker, 6 Times Square, Manhattan
St. Cloud brings a hotel-rooftop option to the Times Square end of the evening. Its indoor and outdoor spaces suit a pre-show toast or a place to decompress after the theater, provided the hours line up. This is a more practical choice when you are already nearby than when the evening calls for a long cross-town detour.
Make it a plan: Leave a generous buffer before curtain time; after the show is often the less clock-conscious option.
For the night that might become dancing
10. Le Bain & The Rooftop
The Standard, High Line, Meatpacking District
Choose Le Bain when the group wants nightlife, DJs, and the possibility of staying out, rather than a quiet panoramic dinner. The rooftop is part of the attraction, but the evening’s program and entry conditions should drive the decision. It is an entirely different kind of plan from a reserved, conversation-first lounge.
Make it a plan: Have dinner in the Meatpacking District and decide on the music before committing the whole group.

A few useful answers
Can I just walk in?
Some venues accept walk-ins, but availability, events, and entry policies vary. Reserve when the rooftop is the main reason for the outing, and confirm whether your booking includes an outdoor seat.
Are these rooftops suitable for children?
Several are explicitly 21+ and others apply age restrictions by time or event. This is an adult-oriented shortlist. Check directly before planning a family visit.
What if it rains?
Compare venues with indoor lounges, then ask what happens to your specific reservation. Indoor access does not guarantee the same view or atmosphere as the terrace.
Keep the good plans coming
