10 Fall Outings in and Around NYC That Feel Like a Mini Escape

Things To Do NY · The next good plan

A change of scenery, without overplanning the whole weekend.

By Things To Do NY · Checked October 23, 2026

These fall outings in and around NYC are organized around actual places you can build a day around. Seven are within the five boroughs; the last three are regional day trips. Choose for the walk, garden, or architecture first, and let autumn color be the bonus.

How we choose: An editorial shortlist based on current official venue information, setting, neighborhood, and practical visitor fit. We have not personally tested every option; numbering is for browsing, not a measured ranking.

Start with your kind of plan

For a simple city walk, choose Central Park or Prospect Park. For gardens, compare NYBG and Wave Hill. For woodland trails, try Forest Park or the Greenbelt. Untermyer, Old Westbury, and Lyndhurst require an outside-NYC travel plan.

For an easy city reset

01. Central Park

Manhattan · free park outing

Central Park is the flexible choice: choose Bow Bridge and the Lake for a familiar scenic walk, the Ramble for winding woodland paths, or the North Woods for a different pace. Trying to cover all three can turn a pleasant afternoon into a march. Pick one area, check the foliage tracker, and let the actual conditions decide the route.

Make it a plan: Add a nearby café or museum with a separate admission plan, rather than crossing the whole park to chase every viewpoint.

For a Brooklyn afternoon with room to wander

02. Prospect Park

Brooklyn · free park outing

Prospect Park suits the person who wants an unhurried walk with several easy ways to shorten or extend it. Choose a section around the lake or the Long Meadow, then leave space for lunch nearby. This is a good fall outing because it does not depend on one timed attraction or one perfect patch of orange leaves.

Make it a plan: Keep lunch in one adjacent neighborhood so the outing feels coherent rather than becoming a cross-Brooklyn checklist.

For a park walk with an art-filled finish

03. Fort Tryon Park & The Met Cloisters

Washington Heights, Manhattan · park free; museum ticket separate

Fort Tryon offers the combination of Hudson-side scenery, garden paths, and a museum that makes the journey feel purposeful. The Cloisters gives the afternoon an indoor anchor if the temperature drops. Decide whether the museum or the outdoor walk is the priority, then give that part of the day the most time.

Make it a plan: Take the park portion in daylight, then build the museum visit around its current hours and your energy level.

04. New York Botanical Garden

Bronx · ticketed attraction

NYBG is a destination for people who want a garden outing with enough space and variety to occupy a substantial part of the day. Choose the ticket around what you actually want to see, then limit the route to a few areas instead of trying to finish the grounds. The visit can work even when fall color is still developing.

Make it a plan: Check transportation and the last admission time first, then plan a warm break during the visit.

For a garden view worth slowing down for

05. Wave Hill

Riverdale, Bronx · admission applies

Wave Hill is the choice for a measured garden visit with Hudson River and Palisades views. It rewards stopping, looking, and choosing a smaller route rather than treating the grounds as a hiking challenge. Go for the landscape and the setting; the exact colors, flowers, and open garden spaces depend on the date.

Make it a plan: Give the return journey a little breathing room so you can linger without missing your connection.

For woodland time in Queens

06. Forest Park

Queens · free park outing

Forest Park belongs on the list for readers who want a wooded walk without making a regional day trip. Its forest trails offer a different fall mood from a manicured garden or a busy Manhattan promenade. Pick a marked route that fits your experience and daylight, rather than following the most inviting turn indefinitely.

Make it a plan: Choose a clear meeting point and a nearby meal after the walk, especially when the group arrives from different neighborhoods.

07. The Greenbelt & High Rock Park

Staten Island · free park outing

The Greenbelt is the pick when your idea of a fall outing is a proper woodland walk. High Rock Park makes a useful starting point for exploring this different side of Staten Island. Choose a realistic out-and-back or marked loop, then treat the walk as the main event rather than adding a long list of other borough stops.

Make it a plan: Arrange the last leg from transit and the return journey in advance, leaving time to finish before dusk.

08. Untermyer Gardens

Yonkers, Westchester · outside NYC; general admission free

Untermyer combines a distinctive walled garden with Hudson-facing scenery, making it a strong choice when you want an outing that feels like a change of scene. The garden architecture is worth the visit even when leaf color is patchy. Keep the route focused on the areas that suit your mobility and the time you have.

Make it a plan: Plan the connection from your station or parking location, and leave time to return before the gardens close.

For a Long Island estate day

09. Old Westbury Gardens

Old Westbury, Nassau County · outside NYC; ticketed

Old Westbury Gardens suits the reader who wants formal gardens and an estate setting rather than a rugged hike. It works best as a deliberate day trip with an arrival plan and enough time to explore a manageable section. The scale of the grounds makes choosing priorities more useful than arriving with a vague intention to see everything.

Make it a plan: Choose one additional stop at most, allowing time for the journey rather than relying on a best-case drive estimate.

10. Lyndhurst

Tarrytown, Westchester · outside NYC; ticketed estate

Lyndhurst is the choice for a Hudson Valley estate outing with a strong architectural focal point. Decide between a grounds-centered visit and a house tour before buying, because they create different kinds of days. Nearby Sleepy Hollow can be an addition, but it is a separate destination with its own travel and reservation needs.

Make it a plan: Give the estate its own daylight window; add a Tarrytown meal rather than squeezing several timed attractions into the same afternoon.
