Hamptons & Montauk Trip Planning: Bases, Costs & Routes

For weekend visitors, couples, families & art-and-scenery trips

Choose a South Fork base, then build a trip around it.

The Hamptons and Montauk draw visitors for ocean scenery, villages, art, dining and an overnight escape. They also stretch across a long peninsula. Choose a western Hamptons art-and-village day or a Montauk stay with nearby scenery; trying to cover every famous stop usually means spending more of the day on Route 27 than you expected.

Which base fits the trip?

Western / central South Fork

Southampton / Water Mill

For an art-first visit, a seated café meal and one nearby town stroll. Parrish Art Museum makes a useful indoor anchor. Good for a shorter outing and groups who want a museum rather than a lighthouse climb.

Use the art-and-village plan
Central South Fork

Bridgehampton / Sagaponack

For a Hamptons stay with an optional Wölffer reservation. Keep it on the South Fork and confirm transport, minimum spend and the selected tasting-room address.

Read Wölffer’s current guest rules
Eastern South Fork

Montauk

For the lighthouse, ocean views and a weekend based at the eastern end. Book your room and arrival/return connections first, then add nearby stops. A Montauk stay is a different plan from a quick Nassau day trip.

Two routes with time to stop

These are editorial itineraries; admissions are the verified portion of each budget. Food, tax/gratuity, fuel and accommodation allowances are estimates. All listed stops are in Suffolk County.

Suggested plan · flexible times

Water Mill art + a Southampton village finish

Two adults · start in Water Mill · about 4–5 hours on the South Fork, plus the journey from home

  1. Suggested 11am: spend 60–90 minutes at Parrish Art Museum. Choose a small number of galleries and use a rest break; there is no need to see everything.
  2. Suggested 12:30pm: have lunch at the museum café or a restaurant with confirmed service. Do not bring an outside picnic to museum café tables.
  3. Suggested 2pm: continue west to Southampton village for a short Main Street / Jobs Lane stroll and optional coffee. Allow roughly 15–25 minutes plus parking as an editorial allowance; leave the eastern end of the Hamptons for another day.

Rainy-day swap: extend the museum and seated café visit; skip the village walk. Museum parking is verified free; town parking eligibility, charges and time limits must be checked on arrival. For a step-free outing, confirm the exact village route and restaurant entrance in advance. Book any tour you want through its actual museum listing. If adding wine, arrange a driver and use the separate Wölffer rules rather than assuming a walk-in table.

A family of two adults and two children ages 6–11 also pays $40 museum admission; its meal and other allowances must be increased. Wine, tours, coffee and long-distance travel are extra.

Suggested plan · flexible times

Montauk: one night, lighthouse and town time

Two adults · start from a Montauk accommodation or town arrival point · two half-days + one night

  1. Day 1, suggested afternoon: check in or leave bags where your accommodation permits. Have a town meal and a short shore/view stop using a legal visitor parking option; check current seasonal business hours.
  2. Day 2, suggested 10:30am: visit Montauk Point during confirmed lighthouse hours. Allow 15–25 minutes for the town-to-point drive as a planning estimate, plus parking. Choose grounds/museum time before deciding on a climb.
  3. Day 2, suggested lunchtime: return toward town for lunch and your booked departure. Keep the afternoon flexible rather than adding a long round trip back toward Southampton.

Rainy-day swap: use the lighthouse museum only if open and the approach suits current weather; pair it with a confirmed open town café/restaurant. In a storm, drop the point entirely. Parrish is a useful museum on a separate western South Fork route, not a quick nearby Montauk swap. Reserve room, cancellation terms and return transport before adding attraction tickets. A car-free trip needs an arranged town-to-point and return connection; do not assume an available taxi on demand.

What to check before booking a stay

Budget and room choice

Compare the full price

Search the exact dates and group size, then compare the full tax-and-fee total, minimum-night requirement, cancellation deadline and parking policy. Confirm whether the room is suitable for your group; a room marketed for two is not a family-of-four assumption.

Book close to the stops you actually chose. A cheaper room much farther west can add repeated travel along Route 27.

Getting there and around

Save the last connection

Use MTA/TrainTime for the actual train and return schedule, or the official Hampton Jitney for its current stops, fares and luggage rules. Fares and travel times have not been quoted here.

Ask your accommodation about the transfer from the stop, local transport and step-free arrival. Train access and an attraction’s access are separate questions.

Mobility and pace

Ask concrete access questions

Ask about the parking-space-to-door route, elevator, room bathroom, seating and restrooms at each stop. Prefer the accessible Parrish galleries or a confirmed level view route if a tower climb or uneven trail does not fit your group.

Seasonal beach rules

Check the exact municipality

Hamptons village/town beaches can have resident or visitor parking-permit rules. Choose the exact beach and confirm access for your dates with its official municipality; a hotel booking does not automatically include beach rights.

Pack for the day you planned

For a one-night South Fork trip, a small overnight bag, phone charger and an existing warm layer are usually enough. Keep shoes familiar and comfortable; pack a refillable bottle, and confirm your room’s storage and arrival policy before carrying extra gear around town.

Use what you already own. If a rain layer is missing, compare packable hooded rain layers on Amazon (paid link). For sheltered town walks, compare compact umbrellas (paid link). In strong coastal wind, a hooded layer is usually more practical than an umbrella. Prices and availability appear at the retailer.

Questions to settle before you go

Is Montauk a quick day trip from NYC?

It can require a long journey each way. Check the actual transport schedule or current road conditions for your date, then decide whether the on-site time justifies it. Our Montauk plan uses an overnight stay; our Water Mill plan keeps stops farther west.

Is the lighthouse included in state-park parking?

No. Parking and lighthouse admission are separate charges. The estimates above include both when the vehicle fee is collected.

Can I combine wineries and the Hamptons?

Use a South Fork winery such as Wölffer when it fits your base and return transport. Our winery guide separates South Fork reservations from North Fork routes and gives a designated-driver plan.
