Christmas on Long Island 2026: Lights, Family Outings & Routes

Christmas beyond NYC · 2026–27

Christmas on Long Island

Harbor villages. A night of lights. A warm place to land.

Long Island makes a good holiday outing when you choose one part of the island and give it time. Pair a Nassau museum with Jones Beach lights, build a separate Port Jefferson festival day, or stay overnight instead of driving home after a late show. These are trips beyond NYC: Nassau and Suffolk County, with different transport needs from Manhattan.

Start with one area

Choose a trip that fits your day.

One evening

Jones Beach lights

A car-based outing with little walking; buy the correct vehicle ticket and eat before you enter.

A family day

Garden City / Uniondale

An indoor theater or museum first, then an optional lights booking. Useful when children need a predictable warm break.

A village outing

Port Jefferson

Choose December 5–6 for the announced Dickens Festival dates; detailed 2026 programming still needs checking.

A January visit

Jones Beach before January 3

The announced lights season reaches January 3. That does not extend the December festivals or theater run.

Book the right base

Stay near the part of the trip you want.

The search below starts in Garden City for a Nassau plan. Change the destination to Port Jefferson or Riverhead for a Suffolk trip. Ask the property about step-free entry, the exact accessible room, bed arrangement, elevator access and storage; a family-room filter alone does not confirm these details.

Hotel-area trade-offs
AreaUseful forCheck before booking
Garden City / UniondaleTheater and museum first, Jones Beach laterA useful Nassau base; each attraction still needs its own drive or taxi. Confirm parking costs and room occupancy.
Port Jefferson / nearby SuffolkA Dickens Festival or harbor weekendStay near the village if walking back after dinner matters. A cheaper highway hotel may add taxis and remove the benefit.
RiverheadAn East End winter breakA separate eastward trip, not a convenient home base for a Jones Beach evening. Compare total drive time before choosing it.

Start your hotel search in Garden City.

Destination is prefilled. Choose your actual dates here; set the full party and rooms on Expedia’s results page before comparing the complete stay total.

Affiliate hotel search · No hotel deal or availability is promised. Confirm taxes, mandatory property fees, parking, deposits, cancellation deadlines and whether the room permits the whole party.

If the widget does not load, open Expedia’s hotel search and enter Garden City. That plain fallback link is not a tracked affiliate link.

We compare location and practical trade-offs, not personally inspected hotels. Book a room-specific access or bed arrangement directly with the property when it matters.

When: November 20, 2026–January 3, 2027. Published hours: Sunday–Thursday 5–10 pm; Friday–Saturday 5–11 pm.

Cost: Paid, per vehicle. The 2026 location page does not provide a verified all-in vehicle price; use its ticket link for vehicle class, eligible night and fees.

Choose this for lights from inside your own vehicle, rather than a long outdoor walk. A Jones Beach reference photo shows the location, not the drive-through installation.

Before you book: Check the date-specific calendar, vehicle restrictions and weather notices. Do not plan to walk through the vehicle course or photograph it from a traffic lane.

Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival

When: December 5–6, 2026: dates listed by the local chamber. Detailed daily program and opening times are not yet verified.

Cost: Do not assume every performance, attraction or parking option is free. The detailed 2026 program must establish what needs a ticket.

Make this a village day with time for a seated lunch and a short harbor loop. The chamber date announcement is current; the separate festival website still displays an older season.

Before you book: Recheck the 2026 program, street closures, parking and accessible routes. The LIRR station is uphill from the waterfront, so plan an onward bus or taxi when needed.

When: Selected performances November 18–December 9, 2026 are currently published. December 5 has 11 am and 1 pm performances; these are scheduled showtimes.

Cost: Theater-only admission: $16 per adult or child. A nonmember $12 add-on requires separate museum admission; it is not a $12 museum-and-show package. Any checkout fee must be confirmed.

A musical gives the day a clear indoor anchor. Choose theater-only if you want one contained booking; buy museum entry separately if you intend to explore exhibits.

Before you book: Match the ticket to a specific performance. Discuss audio, lighting, seating and dietary or access needs with the museum; an indoor show is not automatically a quiet experience.

Countdown to 12!

When: December 31, 2026, 10 am–5 pm. Three ball drops are announced, but their exact times are not published on the listing checked.

Cost: Listed admission: adults $25; children $25; adults 65+ $23. Confirm mandatory checkout fees. Two adults and children aged 6 and 9: $100 in base admission.

An alternative to taking children into Manhattan’s late-night New Year’s Eve crowds. Ask which ball drop fits your family’s arrival and nap schedule.

Before you book: Reserve the event rather than assuming regular museum admission covers it. Check re-entry, stroller storage, accessible seating and the final event schedule.

Less rushing. More enjoying.

Three ways to make the trip work.

All routes are shown below.

Suggested route · evening

One main booking: a Nassau lights evening

For: Couples, friends, local families and anyone who prefers little outdoor walking
Start: Garden City / Uniondale
Demand: Car required for the light course; 0–½ mile of optional walking before it
End: Your Nassau hotel or home after Jones Beach

Date fit: An operating night November 20–January 3; match the ticket to the selected night.

Times below are recommendations for planning. Only a time identified as an official event window or your booked departure is a scheduled time.

  1. 4:00 pm
Have an early seated meal near your starting area. Use the bathroom here; do not rely on finding a stop inside a drive-through route.
  2. 5:00–6:00 pm
Travel to Jones Beach with a traffic buffer. This is a suggested arrival window, not a timed ticket or a promise of a short entry queue.
  3. After the lights
Return to your hotel or home. Leave another attraction for another day rather than chasing a second display across Suffolk.

Reserve: The correct Magic of Lights vehicle admission; dinner if a restaurant is essential; hotel if the driver needs an overnight break.

Indoor / weather alternative: If the operator cancels or travel conditions deteriorate, keep dinner and shorten the evening. Do not buy a nonrefundable second attraction as a weather backup.

Suggested route · weekend

A comfortable family overnight in Nassau

For: School-age children, multigenerational groups and visitors adding one night to an NYC stay
Start: Garden City on December 5
Demand: Car or planned taxis between separate sites; choose 1–2 hours of museum walking, with seats and breaks
End: Garden City / Uniondale after breakfast or an indoor visit on December 6

Date fit: December 5–6, 2026 example; the theater has published December 5 showtimes.

Times below are recommendations for planning. Only a time identified as an official event window or your booked departure is a scheduled time.

  1. Saturday morning
Arrive, leave luggage only if your hotel confirms storage, and eat before the show. An 11 am theater ticket means arriving before 11; our timetable is a planning sequence.
  2. Saturday afternoon
Attend the booked show, then keep a warm rest period. Explore museum exhibits only if you have the separate admission and energy for them.
  3. Saturday evening
Eat early and add Jones Beach lights if that vehicle booking fits. Otherwise stay near your hotel and end the day comfortably.
  4. Sunday
Choose a prechecked indoor museum visit or breakfast and the journey home. Avoid a last-minute cross-island detour before an airport departure.

Reserve: Theater seats together; separate museum entry if wanted; hotel occupancy for all four travelers; optional lights ticket; taxi access if not driving.

Indoor / weather alternative: Theater-only plus a seated meal is already a compact indoor day. For a museum alternative, check the Cradle of Aviation’s selected-date hours and tickets in our family guide.

Suggested route · day

Port Jefferson without the cross-island rush

For: Returning visitors, locals, solo travelers and groups who enjoy a village atmosphere
Start: Port Jefferson waterfront
Demand: Suggested ½–1½ miles in short loops; hills between the station and waterfront; use a taxi or bus to reduce the climb
End: Waterfront parking or your booked connection to the LIRR

Date fit: December 5 or 6 for the announced festival; a nonfestival town visit is a different experience.

Times below are recommendations for planning. Only a time identified as an official event window or your booked departure is a scheduled time.

  1. Late morning
Reach the village and check the day’s official program. Start with one nearby activity rather than assuming there is a continuous all-day show.
  2. Lunch
Sit down indoors. Keep a predictable meal for children or anyone who needs a break from street activity.
  3. Afternoon
Choose a short village loop and, if safe and comfortable, a harbor photo stop. Return for your bus, taxi or train before everyone becomes cold and tired.

Reserve: Any ticketed festival activity after the program is published; lunch if your group needs a guaranteed table; an onward station connection.

Indoor / weather alternative: In heavy rain, use a booked indoor performance if one is announced, or reduce the visit to lunch and a brief village look. Do not replace it with a distant Nassau attraction on the same clock.

Understand the whole cost

Useful budgets, with the assumptions visible.

All sample costs are in US dollars. Food, transport and lodging below are editorial planning allowances, not live quotes. A hotel allowance is a target for the complete stay including mandatory taxes and fees; if your quoted total is higher, replace that allowance. Tickets with a verified fixed price are shown separately from unverified checkout charges.

Free village day · 2 adults

December 5 or 6, 2026; own car from NYC; public village and harbor walk only, no paid festival program.

Included costs and allowances
Hotel$0 · day trip
Tickets$0 for the public walk; add any chosen festival ticket at checkout
Food estimate$50–80 for two
Fuel, tolls and parking estimate$35–70 for the vehicle
Optional shopping$0 in this model

$85–150 for two, plus any paid festival activity. Flights and car rental excluded.

Nassau overnight · 2 adults + children 6 and 9

December 5–6, 2026; one room for four, one night; own car; theater-only tickets, not museum entry.

Included costs and allowances
Hotel planning allowance$190–330 for one night · target complete stay total, not a live room quote
Theater base admission$64 = 4 × $16; any mandatory checkout fee is additional
Food estimate$140–220 for four across the overnight
Fuel, tolls and parking estimate$40–80 for the vehicle
Optional lights / museumAdd the actual lights vehicle quote and any museum admission separately

$434–694 before unverified ticket fees and optional lights/museum admission. Flights, car rental and shopping excluded.

Does a pass help?

Use only attractions you will actually visit. Add their current individual admission totals, then compare the pass price plus any mandatory reservations, supplements and transport. Free town walks and free lights contribute $0 to that break-even calculation. A city sightseeing pass is not automatically valid for a regional holiday train, house tour, garden event or theme-park night. Verify the exact dated inclusion before paying.

From your starting point to the door

Plan the journey in both directions.

From Midtown Manhattan, allow roughly 1–2 hours by car to central Nassau and 1½–2½ hours to Port Jefferson before rest stops; these are off-peak planning estimates, not navigation quotes. Holiday traffic can make either trip longer. LIRR serves Garden City and Port Jefferson, but stations are not the entrance to every attraction. Jones Beach lights require a vehicle; LICM may need a taxi from your chosen station. Use the current MTA trip planner for the actual train, fare and elevator status, and budget the last mile in both directions.

Official transport planning · Last checked October 9, 2026.

Luggage, late arrivals and the return

Hotel check-in and storage are property-specific. Confirm early bag storage and late arrival rather than putting suitcases into an attraction plan. On departure day, return to the airport area or city with a buffer for traffic and weather; a regional outing is a poor place to spend your final tight hours before a flight. Flights and airport transfers are excluded from the sample budgets.

For a NYC stay at either end of the trip, use our JFK, LGA and EWR arrival guide and NYC hotel-area comparison. Price a rental car, insurance, parking and child seats separately if you do not already have a vehicle.

December is not one identical week

Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and January.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: a lights season date range does not prove every night, food outlet or museum is operating; confirm the chosen ticket calendar and a meal. December 26–30: the announced Jones Beach season continues, but the currently published Pigeon run ends December 9 and the Dickens dates are December 5–6. December 31: LICM has its separate Countdown event. January 1–3: Jones Beach remains within its announced window; after January 3, plan a normal winter museum or village outing instead of promising holiday lights.

Restaurant and shop hours do not follow an attraction’s date range. Confirm a meal, bathroom access and your return connection for December 24, 25 and 31 before making a tight plan. Do not assume a New Year’s Eve party, fireworks display or late-night transport is included.

Make the trip fit the people

Warmth, access and a little breathing room.

Choose by needs, not age.

Ask about actual walking distance, steps, accessible restrooms, seating and the noise or lighting environment. Older adults and children have different abilities and preferences within the same age group. A short route, an early entry and one main booking can help a multigenerational party without assuming anyone’s limits.

For toddlers, keep the outing short, protect the nap window and check stroller rules. School-age children may enjoy a specific story or exhibit; teens may prefer a photo walk, an independent food choice or one striking evening attraction.

Plan a real meal and rest.

Budget for seated warm-up stops rather than relying entirely on market snacks. Check the current menu with the restaurant for vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free or allergy needs. We do not label an unverified kitchen suitable for a dietary requirement. Discuss cross-contact separately from the presence of a menu item.

Short winter daylight and coastal or exposed wind make a smaller loop sensible. A taxi can be worth the extra cost when it removes an icy hill, a luggage transfer or a long cold wait; confirm accessible vehicle needs in advance.

Photographs without the sidewalk stress

Port Jefferson: photograph from a clear public sidewalk during your village loop; for fewer distractions, try an ordinary weekday town visit rather than expecting the festival experience then. Jones Beach: take coastal photos before dark if conditions allow; the driver should not take photos while moving through the lights. In museums, ask about exhibit and performance photography and keep flash off where prohibited.

All images have source and reuse-license links. Seasonal images are references from earlier years. They do not verify this year’s lights, weather, operating hours or display design.

A practical winter kit

Pack for the pauses as well as the photos.

Bring weather-appropriate shoes with traction, layers, gloves and a charged phone. Check the forecast shortly before travel; a seasonal reference image is not a forecast. Keep an inexpensive kit and use clothes and equipment you already have.

What to decide now—and what to leave flexible

Choose your dates, party and anchor booking now. Current released train or event tickets can be compared against your actual plan; do not book merely because an old page suggests urgency. Keep unannounced events off a nonrefundable itinerary. Two weeks before travel, resolve meals and access arrangements; 48 hours before, check road, transit and weather notices; the day before, reconfirm the operator’s date, arrival time and ticket instructions.

Questions before you go.

Can I do Long Island Christmas without a car?

A Port Jefferson or Garden City trip can start with LIRR, but budget the connection from the station and the return at night. The Jones Beach drive-through is a vehicle outing, so it should not be added to a rail-only plan without arranging a permitted vehicle visit.

What should a family book first?

Choose the dated show or lights ticket that matters most, then arrange transport and a hotel around that one anchor. The theater-only ticket, museum admission and a vehicle lights ticket are different purchases.

Is Long Island part of the NYC Christmas route?

Nassau and Suffolk County are beyond NYC. Allow a separate day or overnight, rather than treating these stops as another Manhattan neighborhood.
