A good December outing needs fewer stops than you think. Choose the thing everyone is excited about, keep the next stop close, and make a warm break part of the plan. This calendar gives you dates worth knowing, while the itineraries turn the lights, shows and city traditions into evenings that leave room to actually enjoy them.
Choose a date. Find a good reason to go.
Every date has a linked daily idea. Tap a scheduled-event label for organizer details, or a blue Idea label for a flexible outing with helpful links.
Swipe the calendar sideways to see the full week, or use the Daily ideas list below.
Event dates checked October 7, 2026 · Times are New York local time. Daily ideas are suggested planning slots; confirm actual operating dates, availability and access before travelling.
31 linked ideas. Something for every day.
These are our flexible day ideas, not a claim that a timed event or tour operates every day. Move a plan to suit your schedule and use the venue or booking calendar for your actual date. Each card has a useful route, budget notes and links; paid upgrades are optional.
TueStart December with a wish
Leave a wish at the Times Square Wishing Wall during its published hours, then choose one nearby warm stop. Keep the visit short enough to stay cheerful in the crowds.
Budget: The Wishing Wall is free; food and transport are separate.
Make it work: The checked 2026 dates are December 1–29, excluding December 25. Check the official hours before going.
WedChoose your tree-lighting viewing plan
Use the Rockefeller tree-lighting programme to decide whether you want the crowds or a calmer visit on another evening. Have a meeting point and a plan for food before joining a busy viewing area.
Budget: Ordinary public viewing is free; special access, food and transport are separate.
Make it work: The checked lighting date is December 2. Follow the organizer’s live access and timing information; a skyline ticket does not include ceremony access.
ThuA warm Grand Central architecture stop
Enjoy the architecture in Grand Central, look up in the Main Concourse and build in a proper seated snack break. Treat it as a small city adventure rather than a dash between trains.
Budget: Public terminal areas do not need an attraction ticket; food and a private tour cost extra.
Make it work: Keep entrances and commuter paths clear. Our guide explains which highlights work for a self-guided visit.
FriA focused art day before the holiday rush
Make MoMA the main attraction, choose a manageable set of galleries and take a food break afterward. The best museum day leaves time to linger over something you actually like.
Budget: Museum admission, food and transport are separate; compare eligible direct-admission options before booking.
Make it work: Select your actual date and check ticket inclusions. For a smaller budget, use our museum guide to choose a genuinely free alternative.
Compare MoMA ticket options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceSatA Queens tasting afternoon with friends
Choose three small food stops in Jackson Heights, share a few tastes and pause between them. A bakery, a savory snack and one sit-down stop are enough for a satisfying afternoon.
Budget: Walking is free; set your food budget before buying.
Make it work: Check individual shop hours and dietary needs. Our Queens guide compares the DIY approach with a guided tasting experience.
SunDUMBO photos with a warm-food break
Start with the waterfront in DUMBO, wander toward Brooklyn Bridge Park and choose a snack stop. Add only part of the bridge if your group still wants to walk.
Budget: The public walk is free; food and any guided tour are separate.
Make it work: Cobblestones and busy photo spots can slow the day. Keep the route flexible and choose your walking distance first.
Compare NYC walking tours →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceMonA low-cost library-and-park afternoon
Pair a short Bryant Park stop with the Schwarzman Building visitor areas when they are open. Add a warm drink and keep this an easy Midtown afternoon.
Budget: Public park and general visitor areas do not require an attraction ticket; food and transport are separate.
Make it work: Check library visitor hours, closures and access rules. A working research room is not automatically open for unrestricted sightseeing.
TueMake room for a show you actually want
Choose a Broadway or other NYC show you actually want to see, then fit a modest meal around its booked start time. Leave space for the trip home instead of adding another borough afterward.
Budget: Show tickets, food and transport are separate; the theater-area street walk is a free alternative.
Make it work: The booking link is a selection of shows, not a performance guaranteed on this date. Confirm venue, running time and your ticket type.
Compare NYC shows and musicals →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceWedA short LIC winter skyline walk
Enjoy a short Long Island City waterfront walk around Gantry Plaza, take skyline photos and follow it with a warm drink. Make the indoor break part of the plan, not an afterthought.
Budget: The public waterfront walk is free; food, transit and a ferry ride are separate.
Make it work: NYC Ferry is a different service from the free Staten Island Ferry. Read the fare comparison before choosing a boat ride.
ThuA Dyker Heights night, when departures fit
Choose a Dyker Heights lights outing on a date that your tour actually operates, and plan a meal before departure. A guided version can simplify transport when it matches your group’s needs.
Budget: Tour tickets, food and transport to the meeting point are separate; a self-directed public-street walk is the alternative.
Make it work: This date is a suggested planning slot, not a guaranteed departure. Check lighting conditions, tour inclusions and the exact pickup location.
Compare Dyker Heights tour dates →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceFriA classic skyline visit with time to sit down
Use an Empire State Building visit as the main event and pair it with a short public-street architecture walk nearby. Choose your entry time first and leave room for a food break.
Budget: Observation-deck admission, food and transit are separate; the street-level walk is free.
Make it work: Compare ticket levels and inclusions. Clear weather matters more than forcing a particular time into the itinerary.

Make a compact Chinatown-to-Little-Italy food wander, with one savory stop, one bakery stop and time to sit down. Leave the biggest decision to what actually looks good when you arrive.
Budget: The neighborhood stroll is free; all food and a guided tour are separate.
Make it work: Choose modest portions and check what a tour includes before replacing your DIY route with a booking.
Compare NYC food-tour options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceSunA family museum day with a smaller checklist
Give the American Museum of Natural History a focused visit, picking a couple of interests rather than trying to see everything. Add a short Central Park stop only if the weather and your energy allow.
Budget: Admission, special experiences, food and transport are separate.
Make it work: Check which exhibits your ticket includes and whether you qualify for a direct-admission option. Save a second major attraction for another day.
Compare Natural History Museum ticket options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceMonA free winter ferry outing
Ride the Staten Island Ferry for harbor views, take a short St. George stroll if the weather suits and give yourself a relaxed return buffer. A thermos makes the outing feel less like a commute.
Budget: The Staten Island Ferry is free; local transport and food are separate.
Make it work: Follow terminal instructions and disembark at the end of each trip. This is not a Statue of Liberty landing trip.
TueRockefeller sightseeing with a skyline option
Make a Rockefeller Center architecture stroll, then choose Top of the Rock if a skyline experience is your one paid extra. A short walk and one viewpoint make a complete outing.
Budget: Street-level sightseeing is free; the deck, food and transport are paid separately.
Make it work: Check the dated ticket and any add-ons. In October and most of November this is not a promise of a lit Christmas tree.
Compare Top of the Rock ticket options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceWedA quieter Queens Museum afternoon
Make the Unisphere your photo stop, then visit Queens Museum during its published opening hours if the galleries are your main interest. Add a Flushing food stop only if everyone still has energy.
Budget: The outdoor park stop is free; check the museum’s admission options and budget separately for food.
Make it work: The museum is normally closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Check special closures and reserve before turning the walk into an indoor visit.
ThuAn adults-only Lightscape dinner-and-lights plan
If an adults-only Lightscape evening suits your group, plan a comfortable dinner first and enter with your actual ticket slot. Keep the trail as the main event of the night.
Budget: Event admission, food and transport are separate.
Make it work: The checked adults-only date includes December 17. Confirm the 21+ rules and current programme with Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
FriConsider a sensory-friendly early lights visit
Consider Lightscape’s sensory-friendly early entry if the gentler programme suits your group. Arrange food, warm layers and the route home before heading to the garden.
Budget: Event admission, food and transport are separate.
Make it work: The checked special date includes December 18. Read the sensory-friendly programme and capacity details before choosing a ticket.
SatA daylight Snug Harbor winter walk
Explore Snug Harbor’s outdoor grounds at an unhurried pace, look for public art and leave time for the journey back. Choose one paid indoor attraction only if it adds something to your day.
Budget: The general outdoor grounds are free; individual attractions, food and local transport can cost extra.
Make it work: Go in daylight and plan the local bus or other onward journey. Snug Harbor is not at the St. George ferry terminal.
SunA short Prospect Park outing with a thermos
Choose one familiar entrance and a manageable Prospect Park loop, followed by a warm drink nearby. Bring a small snack so the day does not depend on finding a table immediately.
Budget: The park outing is free; optional purchases and transit are separate.
Make it work: Keep to daylight and well-used paths. Give children one main outdoor stop rather than a long list of destinations.
MonGrand Central with one optional skyline upgrade
Start with Grand Central’s public architecture, take a snack break and add a timed SUMMIT visit if that is the experience you most want. Two nearby stops keep the day manageable.
Budget: The terminal stop is free; SUMMIT admission, food and transport are extra.
Make it work: Select your actual date, read ticket inclusions and allow time for arrival and security. Skip the upgrade if it pushes your budget.
Compare SUMMIT ticket options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceTueA small Roosevelt Island river-view break
Make a short Roosevelt Island riverside walk, take in the skyline and decide whether the tram or another transit option best fits your journey. You do not need a second big attraction to make it worthwhile.
Budget: The public walk is free; tram or other transit and food are separate.
Make it work: Use the correct fare and service information for your chosen transport. Keep the outdoor part short on a cold, windy day.
WedBryant Park skating atmosphere and cocoa
Enjoy the Bryant Park skating atmosphere, then take a warm-drink break. Watch from the park for a low-cost version, or reserve a skating session if you want to participate.
Budget: Rink admission and paid extras differ: rentals, storage and other charges may apply. Food and transport are separate.
Make it work: The rink season starts October 28 in the checked 2026 schedule. Skating needs its own reservation and equipment check.
ThuA Christmas Eve harbor-air break
Enjoy a short Seaport-area public waterfront walk, look at the harbor and choose a warm indoor stop. A photo walk can stand on its own, with a cruise as a separate optional upgrade.
Budget: Public-street sightseeing is free; food, cruises and transport are extra.
Make it work: Cruises depart from different piers. Check the meeting point before combining a booking with this neighborhood.
Compare NYC cruise options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceFriOne happy Christmas tree-viewing walk
If you feel like a Christmas outing, choose a short Rockefeller Center tree-viewing walk and bring a warm drink or snack. Let one lovely public sight be enough for the day.
Budget: Ordinary street-level tree viewing is free; transit and purchases are separate.
Make it work: Expect crowds and holiday business closures. The Wishing Wall is closed on December 25; do not add it to this plan.
SatBoxing Day boardwalk air
Enjoy a daylight Coney Island boardwalk walk, bring a warm drink and choose a short route that feels good in the weather. Make the sea air the attraction.
Budget: The public boardwalk outing is free; food and transit are separate.
Make it work: This is an off-season walk. Do not assume rides, concessions or other attractions operate; check anything you want to add.
SunAn Arthur Avenue afternoon after checking hours
Build an Arthur Avenue afternoon around a short neighborhood stroll, one bakery stop and a meal you have actually budgeted for. Share tastes if your group wants variety without ordering everything.
Budget: The street walk is free; purchases and transport are separate.
Make it work: Check your chosen businesses before leaving, especially on holidays. A food-tour listing should match the borough and route you want.
Compare NYC food-tour options →GetYourGuide affiliate link · choose your actual date and check availability, inclusions and total priceMonA Fort Tryon Park daylight reset
Choose a short daylight walk in Fort Tryon Park and enjoy the landscape at a comfortable pace. If you add the Cloisters, make it a separate museum plan with its own admission and hours check.
Budget: The public park outing is free; museum entry, food and travel are separate.
Make it work: Use a route suited to your mobility and the weather. Do not assume park access includes free entry to a museum.
TueAn Astoria walk before the year ends
Take a daylight river-view walk in Astoria Park, then choose a nearby café or a simple meal. Keep this one close to home and let the park be the reason to step outside.
Budget: The public park outing is free; food and transport are separate.
Make it work: The waterfront can feel colder than inland streets. Use a shorter loop when it is windy.
WedChoose one free-admission museum outing
Pick one free-admission museum from our guide, check its hours and eligibility, then plan a single nearby snack stop. A carefully chosen venue beats a vague list of museums you cannot all reach.
Budget: Use the venue’s current admission policy; free entry does not cover food or travel.
Make it work: Do not assume pay-what-you-wish applies to everyone. Culture Pass visits need an available reservation, not just an eligible library card.
ThuAn easy dinner and a cozy 2027 countdown
Make a warm dinner, choose one nearby daytime walk if the weather suits and use the official Times Square webcast for an easy countdown at home. A happy New Year does not require a difficult journey back.
Budget: The official webcast is free; food and any chosen outing are separate.
Make it work: The checked December 31 webcast begins at 6 p.m. New York time. Live street attendance has separate crowd and access rules.
The events worth building a day around
Times Square New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall
December 1–29, except December 25 · 11 a.m.–8 p.m.
Write a wish for the new year on official Times Square confetti. It is a small, hopeful stop that can turn a regular Midtown walk into a tradition.
Before you go
The mobile wall is closed December 25. Check the current plaza location; the digital submission option is also listed by the organizer.
Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting
December 2 · ceremony details to follow
The lighting ceremony marks the start of the illuminated-tree season. If the tree is what you want to see, a later visit can be a calmer choice.
Before you go
The date is confirmed; visiting hours and further ceremony details are still being published. Do not plan around an unannounced start time.
Lightscape sensory-friendly early entry
December 3 & 18 · 4 p.m.
These early entries are designed for adults and children with disabilities or sensory sensitivity who would prefer a less crowded trail.
Before you go
Reserve the appropriate session and review the access information. A standard evening ticket is not automatically the same booking.
Lightscape 21+ nights
December 10 & 17
An adults-only Lightscape evening can make a good date or friends’ outing. Build it around the trail and one nearby food stop.
Before you go
Choose the correct 21+ ticket and review the organizer’s entry requirements. These nights are not family sessions.
Times Square New Year’s Eve webcast
December 31 · webcast from 6 p.m.
Bring the countdown home with the official webcast, rather than treating hours outdoors in Times Square as the only way to celebrate.
Before you go
The organizer says the 2026 accessibility-stream link will be posted in December. Check the current webcast page near the date; the midnight celebration welcomes 2027.

Ongoing experiences this month
These have separate performance or booking calendars. The main date grid highlights special dates and season openings; it does not claim every ongoing event runs every day.
Christmas Spectacular
December performances · season ends January 4, 2027
Make a Radio City performance the main event, with a simple meal or plaza walk alongside it. You do not need several paid attractions in one day.
Before you go
Choose your date and seats before scheduling the rest. Compare total checkout prices and allow for arrival checks.
Holiday Train Show
December dates · season through January 10, 2027
NYBG’s miniature city and model trains are a good choice for a family afternoon. Leave time for the exhibits instead of racing through for photos.
Before you go
Check the date-specific schedule. December evening extensions are listed separately by NYBG; reserve for the hours you intend to visit.
Lightscape evening trail
Selected December nights · through January 3, 2027
The garden’s outdoor light trail is an evening destination in its own right. Choose the operating night and session that suit your group.
Before you go
Check the dated booking calendar, weather guidance and accessibility information. An empty calendar date does not imply the trail is open every night.
Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights
Selected December dates · through January 3, 2027
Animal lanterns and holiday displays offer another family night out. Pick the zoo or the garden for one evening rather than trying to cover both.
Before you go
Review entry times and what your ticket includes. Do not assume daytime admission automatically covers the evening event.
Three ways to make the month feel good
These are our suggested plans, not operator timetables. Adjust for your ticket slot, travel, weather and how much walking your group enjoys. Food allowances are planning estimates, not restaurant quotes.
After December 2 · about 3–4 hours
Midtown holiday glow, with a spending limit
- Mid-afternoonStart at Bryant Park for the skating atmosphere. Decide on your warm-drink budget before browsing.
- Early eveningWalk toward Rockefeller Center for the tree, allowing extra time for crowds and access controls.
- If you still have energyContinue to Times Square’s Wishing Wall during its listed dates and hours, or end with a seated food stop.
Budget: Public-space browsing and the Wishing Wall have no attraction admission. Food, transit, skating rentals and any skyline attraction are extra.
Make it work: Avoid the lighting ceremony night if an easy stroll is the goal. If adding SUMMIT, start the day near Grand Central and shorten this route; do not try to squeeze it into every holiday stop.

A Brooklyn lights night with one main event
- Before bookingChoose either a self-directed neighbourhood visit or a guided tour with its own meeting point and itinerary.
- Before the lightsEat first and allow time for the journey. A subway trip can still involve a walk at the Brooklyn end.
- During the eveningKeep the route manageable, enjoy the displays from public sidewalks and head home before everyone is frozen.
Budget: Viewing residential displays from public sidewalks does not require an attraction ticket. Transit, food and a guided tour are separate; donations or extras are your choice.
Make it work: These are private homes, not one venue with a single guaranteed opening schedule. Respect residents, keep entrances clear and check your tour’s current departure dates.

A Bronx train-show afternoon that stays enjoyable
- Before leavingReserve the NYBG ticket that includes the Holiday Train Show and review arrival and access details.
- Your reserved entryMake the miniature city and trains the main stop, giving everyone time to look at their own pace.
- AfterwardHave a warm snack and decide whether a short garden walk suits the weather. Keep the journey home uncomplicated.
Budget: Budget separately for each person’s admission, food and transport. Check any age-based rules against your actual ticket selection.
Make it work: For a lower-cost alternative, choose an indoor museum or library outing from our family guide. Save Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights for another date rather than buying two big experiences to rescue a tired afternoon.
